ORTO-15 Test
Over the last 10 years, there has been a growing awareness of the positive effects of a healthy diet. However, an obsession with a healthy approach to food can have a negative impact on health and quality of life. This condition is called "orthorexia nervosa" (ON). ON is a new concept among the group of disorders called eating disorders and has not yet been included in the diagnostic classification system. Unlike anorexia and bulimia, people with orthorexia nervosa may experience feelings of guilt and deficiency about not eating a healthy diet. As the obsession with healthy food becomes extreme, psychological and social complications arise. The obsessive and compulsive features of orthorexia nervosa become pathological over time. The main indicator of this disorder is the effort to eat healthy and high quality foods. The focus on biologically pure foods and the shops that sell them leads to a pathological obsession and a particular lifestyle. Efforts to follow dietary rules lead to intense anxiety, guilt and shame and are followed by stricter dietary restrictions. When thoughts and feelings about healthy eating become such that choosing the right food or eating right becomes the most important part of people's lives, this attitude can become pathological, leading to significant dietary restrictions and changing eating behavior. People eat only certain foods, sometimes resulting in deficiencies of important nutrients. In addition, there are many rules about what to eat and how to eat. This affects people in many areas.
The term ON is a combination of the Greek words "orthos" and "orexia". Its meaning in Turkish is correct and appropriate eating. However, when the condition reaches the extreme level mentioned above, it becomes pathological and negatively affects people's quality of life.
It is a 15-question scale developed in 2005 to assess orthorectic tendencies. It was adapted into Turkish by Arusoğlu et al.
The orthorectectic questionnaire is about your eating habits. Please read each question carefully and check the appropriate option. Thank you.
