What is Accreditation?

Accreditation is a process by which health care institutes are reviewed by an independent organization to determine whether the institutions meet the requirements of a set of standards designed to improve the quality of care.

Joint Commission International (JCI)

In 1951 the first accreditation body in the health sector "Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals" (JCAH) is established with the participation of, American College of Surgeons, American College of Physicians, American Hospital Association, American Medical Association and Canadian Medical Association.

In 1987 after development of accreditation programs for health institutes other than hospitals commission’s name is changed as "Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations“(JCAHO).

Joint Commission International (JCI) which is established for the international accreditation services is a unit of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) which is a non-profit organization focused on enhancing the quality and safety of health services.

Being the international branch of Joint Commission, Joint Commission International (JCI) is working together with health institutions, health ministries and global organizations in 80 countries since 1994. JCI is focused on improving patient care safety through accreditation and certification services. JCI is a worldwide well-known commission om healthcare quality and patient safety. JCI auditors are well trained clinicians advocating patient safety. Infection control, medication safety, patient care and treatment, patient evaluation and facility safety, health care quality improvement and patient safety are their focuses. JCI standards are developed by healthcare service experts from all over the World and tested all over the World. JCI accreditation decisions are taken by an international committee of healthcare service experts.

In June 2011 JCI has been inspected in accordance with its audit process, quality and standards and accredited by the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua). Thus reliability of the JCI’s audit and accreditation process has been proven in the international arena.
