Depression Isn’t Just for Winter

We’ve heard lot about winter blues, but there is also summertime sadness, which is recognized as Seasonal Affective Disorder.  In winter people tend to be affected by melancholy, while in summer we are likely to act in an aggressive way and feel gloomy. Experts recommend to spend outdoors at least 30 minutes per day to minimize the impact of our negative thoughts and moodiness.

Circadian rhythms

Professor Sermin Kesebir notes that there several main triggers of summertime depression. The first one is circadian or biological rhythms. Believe it or not, our bodies have their own clocks,  they are called circadian rhythms. This clock affects our sleep patterns, our eating habits and even hormones levels. They might vary from person to person, nevertheless, both early birds and night owls have to follow their own routine sleep pattern. When it gets out of synch, we have problems with our overall health, including mental health disorders.


Our sleeping habit have a dirct impact on our mental health. Specialists suggest that people diagnosed with depression and other psychiatric disorders at the same time have often sleeping disorders as insomnia, segmented or broken sleep, early morning awakening and drowsiness. It is a fact that a drastic change in a sleep pattern or poor sleep habits, for example, when a person used to wake up early and go to be early suddenly starts to get up late and fall asleep late too, leads to different psychiatric disorders as depression. Besides, late awakening and late falling asleep as well as a misaligned circadiam rhythm can give rise not only to depression, but also to obsessive-compulsive disroder (OCD).

Professor Sermin Kesebir highlights that a healthy circadian rhythm maintains our mental health and emotional stability. In summer there is a notable air temperature change, daytime is longer than nighttimem therefore, our body needs to adapt to those changes. Specialists recomment to seek out the sun, this will help to reinforce your biological rhythms.  

Seasonal Affective Disorder
